Canvas
Complete Nexts Canvas tutorial: organize text, images, and video, then create continuously with AI and the local Agent.
Open Canvas
Select Canvas in the activity bar to open Nexts Canvas inside the workspace. The desktop app automatically connects the local Canvas Agent, enables its MCP server, and securely shares the current Nexts account session with the embedded canvas, so you do not need to sign in again.
The first launch briefly shows “Connecting Nexts Canvas and Nexts Agent.” If the local Agent fails to start, the canvas remains usable, but Nexts experts cannot operate it through the local connection until that connection is restored.
nexts-canvas is a local MCP managed by the desktop app. Normal use does not require manual installation, a copied URL, or an API key. If Canvas is missing from the activity bar, update Nexts first.
What you can do
- Create multiple infinite-canvas projects with pan, zoom, selection, connections, undo, and redo.
- Organize work with text, image, video, and generation-configuration nodes.
- Upload or drop media, crop images, and save results to My assets.
- Connect upstream text and reference media, then configure model, aspect ratio, count, resolution, or duration to generate images and video.
- Use the canvas assistant with selected nodes and their upstream context, then insert text or generated media back into the canvas.
- Import or export canvas projects, and use account-backed cloud storage and Credits after signing in.
A good first session
- Create a project: give it a clear name based on the topic or deliverable.
- Write the creative goal: add a text node describing the subject, scene, style, composition, and anything to avoid.
- Add references: drop in images or video; crop them first when needed, then save useful assets to My assets.
- Connect inputs: add an image, video, or generation-configuration node and connect the prompt and reference media to the correct downstream node.
- Set generation options: choose the model, aspect ratio, count, resolution, or duration, confirm the official or personal provider, then generate.
- Keep branches: do not overwrite a promising result. Branch alternate directions and save the final choice to the asset library.
Use the canvas assistant with selected nodes
Select one or more nodes before opening the canvas assistant. It reads the selected nodes and their upstream context. Try requests such as:
- “Summarize the visual traits shared by these reference images and write a more precise prompt.”
- “Rewrite this copy in three tones and insert each version as a text node.”
- “Use the selected character image and scene description to generate a cinematic 16:9 frame.”
If the answer lacks context, verify the node connections and make sure the required nodes are selected.
Work with Nexts experts
While Canvas is open, the desktop app prepares the local nexts-canvas connection. In chat, you can ask Nexts to inspect or operate the current canvas—for example, create nodes, organize the layout, or add generated results to the project. Canvas writes still follow the current connection and permission state.
Start with inspection, then authorize changes:
- “Inspect the current canvas and explain the purpose of each branch. Do not change anything.”
- “Group the loose references into character, scene, and style sections.”
- “Create a text node with the final prompt we just wrote and connect it to the image-generation node.”
- “Keep all existing nodes and duplicate the second creative direction on the right.”
Import, export, and continue on another device
- Before export, wait for active generation and uploads to finish, then save a recoverable project file.
- If media is missing after import, confirm the original asset is still accessible or add it again from My assets.
- Projects and assets in cloud storage can continue on another device signed in to the same Nexts account. Local files that were not uploaded do not automatically appear elsewhere.
Troubleshoot connection or generation
- Canvas opens but an expert cannot operate it: keep Canvas open and retry from chat. If it still fails, restart Nexts so the local Canvas Agent reconnects.
- No Canvas entry: update Nexts and confirm the current build supports Canvas.
- A node ignores references: check connection direction, selected nodes, and upstream nodes.
- Generate is unavailable: check the model provider, parameters, Credits, or personal-provider credentials.
- Cloud projects do not sync: confirm sign-in, network access, completed uploads, and available storage.
See the MCP directory for the nexts-canvas connection summary.
Data and billing
Canvas projects, assets, and media can use cloud storage attached to your Nexts account so you can continue on another signed-in device. Image and video generation through the official Nexts channel uses separate Credits; these are independent from chat-model points or subscription allowances. When you use your own model provider, that provider's billing and data-handling terms apply.
